Pound-to-Euro Holds Near €1.18 Amid German Orders Collapse
The Pound-to-Euro (GBP/EUR) exchange rate remained close to €1.18 on Tuesday, showing little movement despite significant economic turbulence. At the time of writing, GBP/EUR was trading at €1.1776, reflecting minimal daily change. The Pound found some support from growing expectations of a more aggressive stance from the Bank of England and hopes for improved UK-EU relations, but these factors were not strong enough to drive Sterling higher.
The Euro stabilized after hitting multi-month lows against several currencies on Monday. Concerns over a potential French debt crisis and political instability in Spain had initially weakened the Euro, but the single currency recovered slightly as French bond markets steadied and the US Dollar weakened. The Euro also faced a sharp decline in German factory orders, which dropped by 10.6% in August, far worse than the expected 1% decrease.
Looking ahead, Germany’s industrial production figures, set to be released on Wednesday, will be closely watched. A positive reading could provide some support for the Euro, while a negative outcome may increase downward pressure. Additionally, speeches from two European Central Bank policymakers, one viewed as dovish and the other as hawkish, could introduce volatility in the Euro’s value. Meanwhile, the Pound lacks significant domestic catalysts, which may limit its ability to establish a clear direction.
