Pound Weakens on Surprise Borrowing Figures, Eyes Set on September PMIs
The Pound-Dollar exchange rate has weakened to its lowest levels since late July due to an unexpected increase in British government borrowing. The UK's public sector net borrowing surged to £18.3bn in August, exceeding projections of £15.7bn. This sharp rise in borrowing highlights the fiscal constraints facing Chancellor John Healey ahead of next month's Budget.
The US Dollar initially strengthened on reports of a risk-off environment and Federal Reserve rate hike expectations. However, it pared its gains after news emerged that Iran is willing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the US reduces military pressure. The proposed reopening remains conditional, with no signs from the US that they are willing to accept Tehran's terms.
The Pound-US Dollar exchange rate may test fresh lows in mid-week trade as the UK's preliminary PMIs for September are released. Consensus forecasts predict a moderation of activity across both manufacturing and services sectors, which could dent investor appetite for the UK currency.
