Rand Weakens Against Dollar as US Yields Rise
The South African rand continues to slide, marking its fourth straight weekly loss. The currency's value fell by almost 2% for the week, reaching a rate of 16.6675 per US dollar on Friday morning.
This decline is largely attributed to rising US Treasury yields and a stronger US dollar. As global investors seek higher returns on their investments, they tend to favor holding dollars over riskier emerging-market assets like the rand.
Despite positive local headlines, including softer-than-expected producer inflation and a larger trade surplus, the rand remains under pressure. The release of the US payrolls report later in the day could further impact the currency's value, with a strong jobs number potentially pushing yields and the dollar up again.
