Rate Hike Fuels Populist Surge Amid Cost-of-Living Pressures
The Reserve Bank of Australia raised interest rates for the fourth time this year on Tuesday. The move may have provided some relief to the Labor party, as its primary vote fell by only 1 percentage point to 28 per cent in a recent poll.
According to the poll, which was conducted by The Australian Financial Review/Redbridge/Accent Research, the one-point rise to 29 per cent in support for One Nation and the one-point fall to 21 per cent in first-preference support for the Coalition were also within the margin of error.
The interest rate hike is likely to exacerbate cost-of-living pressures on households, which may fuel further support for populist insurgencies like One Nation. The party's primary vote has been steadily increasing, and this trend could continue as more Australians struggle with rising living costs.
