RBA Caught Off Guard by War's Economic Impact
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has come under scrutiny for its handling of the economic impact of the Middle East war. According to Governor Michele Bullock, the central bank was caught off guard by the disruption to the global oil trade, which has exacerbated inflation.
Bullock acknowledged that the RBA's economists underestimated the severity of the inflationary effects caused by the war over Iran. This is despite a 4.6% cash rate hike aimed at curbing inflation and driving unemployment towards its target of around 4.75%.
Jonathan Kearns, a former RBA economist now with Challenger Investment Management, noted that the central bank's goal is to inflict financial pain on Australians in order to reduce capacity pressures and bring inflation back under control.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has been criticized for increasing government spending by $22 billion more than it raised last year, which some argue is exacerbating inflation. Chalmers has defended the Government's economic management as 'responsible' and pointed to Australia's superior growth compared to other economies.
