RBA Raises Interest Rates to Combat Inflation Amid Global Economic Pressures
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has raised interest rates to 4.6% in an effort to combat inflation, which has reached 15-year highs. RBA governor Michele Bullock attributed the increase to a combination of factors, including the energy supply shock caused by the conflict and the biggest technology investment boom on record.
Bullock emphasized that the lingering conflict is making things worse, but Australia started from a position of excess demand before it began. She noted that businesses may try to pass through cost increases if they're in industries with excess demand, but this can be challenging for households who are already struggling with high mortgage rates.
Independent economist Chris Richardson argued that inflation is simply 'too much money chasing too little stuff.' He suggested that reducing government spending would help alleviate the issue, as it would reduce demand and allow the economy to produce more goods and services.
