RBI Intervention Supports Rupee Amid Global Market Volatility
The Indian Rupee has been experiencing a modest gain against the US Dollar, recouping some of its recent losses. The USD/INR pair is struggling to build momentum above 95.96 due to suspected intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Analysts at MUFG suggest that the RBI's activity likely helped the Rupee stay stronger than the psychologically important 96-per-dollar mark.
The market sentiment remains unfavorable, however, as global forces weigh on emerging market currencies. Elevated US Treasury yields, driven by higher energy prices and the Federal Reserve's guidance for interest rates to remain higher for longer, continue to dampen appetite for risk-sensitive assets. The MCX Crude Oil contract is trading 2.3% lower near Rs. 8,950.
Rising Indian inflation and firm domestic growth have strengthened expectations for a more hawkish RBI policy stance. MUFG analysts note that India's August inflation rose 4.8% year-over-year from a revised 4.5%, signaling a strengthening in inflation dynamics. This trend is likely to keep headline inflation above 5% in the second half of the fiscal year, underscoring the need for a tighter policy bias.
