Romania's Leu Hits New Record Low Against Euro
The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has set a new record for the euro's value against the leu, with an official exchange rate of 5.3447 lei/euro. This surpasses the previous record reached on September 23, at 5.2788 lei/euro.
Analysts predict that the currency's depreciation will continue as the BNR seems willing to allow the exchange rate to float more freely, after using billions of euros from its foreign exchange reserves to maintain a leu affected by the economic and political situation.
The increase in the BNR rate was expected following yesterday's sharp decline on the interbank market, with the euro reaching 5.35 lei at one point, significantly above the psychological level of 5.3 lei.
