SNB Dovish Shift Puts Pressure on Swiss Franc
The Swiss National Bank (SNB) maintained interest rates unchanged in its latest decision. However, the central bank surprised markets by adopting a more dovish stance, downplaying the impact of second-round inflation effects and adjusting its foreign exchange policy.
The SNB's decision was seen as a deviation from market expectations, which had priced in a more hawkish approach. Francesco Pesole of ING explained that the SNB's move reflects its assessment of the economic situation, with policymakers viewing the recent price shock as temporary.
Pesole emphasized that the removal of the reference to an 'increased willingness' to intervene from the SNB's statement does not imply a reluctance to act if necessary. Instead, it is seen as an adjustment reflecting the Swiss Franc's recent weakness.
The SNB's stance has significant implications for the value of the Swiss Franc. Pesole believes that market pricing remains too hawkish and expects downside risks for the currency. He predicts that EUR/CHF may retest its highs around 0.9480, while USD/CHF could rally towards 0.85 in response to a potential Federal Reserve hike.
