South Korean Won Surges to 10-Month High on Softer Dollar and Strong Exports

The South Korean won has reached its strongest level in over 10 months, trading at around 1,399 per US dollar. This recent surge is attributed to a softer US dollar, as the Treasury yields have eased from their recent highs and investors have scaled back expectations for further Fed rate hikes following softer US economic data.

The won's appreciation has also been supported by persistent dollar-selling flows from Korean exporters, particularly in the semiconductor industry, where export receipts have been strong. Additionally, the conversion of SK hynix's ADR (American Depositary Receipt) proceeds into won has boosted domestic dollar supply and contributed to the currency's sharp appreciation.

However, higher oil prices near three-week highs and renewed US-Iran tensions may pose a headwind for the won, as the lack of progress in peace efforts raises concerns over potential disruptions to Middle Eastern oil supplies and higher import costs for South Korea.
