Spain's Banks Deploy AI Shields Against Rogue AI
Spanish banks are taking steps to protect themselves against AI-powered cyber threats. The European Central Bank (ECB) has asked major institutions under its supervision to set specific safeguards against cyber threats powered by advanced AI models.
The ECB's request came in a letter dated July 7, 2026, with banks required to submit action plans by October 31, 2026. The ECB sees AI as a factor that increases the speed and scale of known cyber risks, rather than creating a new class of threats.
Banks are responding by reinforcing traditional cybersecurity systems and applying new patches across their software. They are also using controlled AI tools to spot and block attacks created or accelerated by hostile AI agents.
The use of AI in defense is widespread among the institutions directly supervised by the ECB, with over 90% already using AI, 85% using generative AI, and 64% applying these technologies for anti-money laundering and cybersecurity purposes.
