Treasury Bond Yields Hit Nearly Two-Decade Highs Amid Economic Concerns
Yields on long-term U.S. Treasury bonds have reached their highest point in nearly 20 years, sparking concerns about the direction of the economy.
The yield on the 30-year note touched 5.3% on Tuesday, its highest level since 2007, while the yield on the 10-year bond hovered around 4.71%, also near multi-decade highs.
These rising yields drive up interest rates on mortgages and other consumer and business credit, making borrowing more expensive for households and companies.
Economists point to a combination of factors contributing to these high yields, including the national debt approaching $40 trillion, persistent inflation above 2%, and expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise its benchmark interest rate to combat rising costs.
