Trump Escalates Trade War with Canada, CAD Weakens Further
The Canadian Dollar has weakened significantly after trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa collapsed. The US is set to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian automobiles, auto parts, and steel starting in January, while Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney vows to retaliate 'dollar for dollar' from September 8.
US President Donald Trump announced the tariff increase, accusing Canada of taking advantage of its trade relationship with the US for years. He encouraged affected companies to move production to US territory to avoid tariffs.
The breakdown in negotiations and the prospect of further tariffs have put additional pressure on the Canadian economy, which is heavily dependent on trade with its US neighbor.
However, geopolitical developments in the Middle East may provide some support to the Canadian currency through higher Oil prices. The US Department of the Treasury is expected to announce a broader scope for secondary sanctions targeting countries and entities that continue to do business with Iran.
