Trump Expresses Concern Over Weak Yen at Japan-US Summit
US President Donald Trump expressed concern about Japan's weak yen during his recent summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. According to Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, who disclosed the exchange for the first time after consulting with the Prime Minister's Office, Trump raised this issue as a general principle that an undervalued yen is problematic.
The leaders' discussion on foreign exchange reaffirmed the shared US-Japan stance behind their July 31 coordinated intervention. This includes a commitment to counter excessive volatility and disorderly moves in the yen, Katayama said.
Katayama also mentioned that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and she will continue to communicate closely on various matters, including foreign exchange. The dollar has been rallying against the yen and other major currencies due to strong US economic data and a hawkish Federal Reserve.
