Trump Slams Fed Rate Hike Amid Inflation Concerns
President Donald Trump expressed his disapproval of the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates for the first time in over three years. Speaking on the tarmac in Gastonia, North Carolina, Trump stated that U.S. interest rates should be 1% or lower and called for them to be reduced 'FAST!'
In a conversation with Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh before the vote, Trump allegedly said the board was 'very hostile.' However, Warsh denied any influence from their conversation, emphasizing the Fed's independence in making monetary policy decisions.
The decision to raise interest rates aims to combat persistent inflation and higher energy prices. The Fed's preferred inflation measure is up 3.7% from a year earlier in July, exceeding the central bank's 2% goal. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, inflation was 3.3%.
Brown University's Climate Solutions Lab estimates that the average U.S. household has spent more than $825 extra on gasoline and diesel since the war began February 28 compared to what researchers estimate households would have spent without the conflict.
