Trump Suspends 50% Tariff on Canadian Imports Pending Agreement
US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday night that he would suspend for three days the 50% tariff on certain Canadian imports. The tariffs were set to take effect Wednesday morning and cover approximately $20 billion in goods, with the US threat invoking Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930.
The pause on the tariffs is pending final documentation of a preliminary agreement between the two countries. According to Trump's social media post, Canada and the US have reached an agreement that would improve access for US goods into the Canadian market, as well as include 'economic security commitments' and 'digital trade coordination'. These areas have been key points of contention in bilateral trade tensions.
Despite the tariff delay, analysts remain skeptical about the durability of any deal. Commerzbank FX analyst Michael Pfister noted that the Canadian dollar's muted response to the news reflects ongoing market caution about whether an agreement will materialize and what form it will take.
