Trump's Fed Firing Threat Rebuffed by Cook Lawyer

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook's lawyer has fired back at President Donald Trump's renewed threat to oust her from the central bank. In a five-page letter, lawyer Abbe Lowell defended Cook against allegations of mortgage fraud, calling them 'unfounded and untrue.' The White House had given Cook until August 26th to respond to President Trump's claims, but she has denied any wrongdoing.

Trump first moved to fire Cook in late August 2025, after Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte sent a criminal referral to the Department of Justice accusing her of possible mortgage fraud. The Supreme Court blocked Trump from firing Cook in June, but left him with a path to try again to remove her.

Lowell argued that trying to fire Cook based on Pulte's referral 'would ignore the facts and the law.' He noted that President Trump himself, along with others in his administration, have reportedly listed multiple properties as primary residences in the past. Lowell wrote that an 'inadvertent oversight' is not fraudulent or criminal.

The White House has yet to comment on Lowell's letter.
