Trump's Fed Renovation Fiasco: A Tale of Cost Overruns and Power Struggle
President Donald Trump's administration launched an attack on Jerome Powell, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, over cost overruns for renovations to the Fed's Washington headquarters. The project, which began in 2017 and was initially budgeted at $1.88 billion, had risen to an estimated $2.46 billion by December 2024.
The dispute came to a head in April 2025 when news reports surfaced about the 'ornate' renovations, sparking calls for an investigation from Elon Musk, then head of the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency.
Powell defended the project, citing safety issues and design changes mandated by the national planning commission. He also attributed rising costs to material and labor shortages due to post-pandemic inflation and unanticipated asbestos removal costs.
