Trump's Trade War Threatens to Devastate American Economy
US President Donald Trump has claimed that his country doesn't need Canada, but the opposite is true. The US relies heavily on Canadian energy, including oil, which flows into American refineries and fuels cars, trucks, and airplanes. In fact, about 4 million barrels of Canadian crude oil enter the US every day, making up nearly 20% of total US petroleum consumption.
Canada also supplies aluminum, potash, and auto parts to the US, with over 80% of US potash imports coming from Canada. Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian aluminum, but acknowledges that the US desperately needs the metal. This is just one example of how deeply intertwined the two economies are.
Canada's energy exports play a significant role in the trade deficit between the two countries. In fact, without energy exports, the US would have run a trade surplus last year. The White House has portrayed the relationship as unfair, but experts say that the US relies heavily on Canadian energy and materials to fuel its economy.
