The U.S. labor market showed surprising strength in October 2026, with nonfarm payrolls (NFP) increasing by 165,000 jobs, far exceeding economists' expectations of 59,000. The report also included upward revisions for the previous two months, adding a total of 84,000 jobs. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.1%, below the anticipated 4.2%. Analysts noted that the data suggests last month's weakness may have been temporary rather than a sign of deeper economic trouble.

Average hourly earnings grew by 0.4% month-over-month, reaching $38.00, and marked a 3.1% year-over-year increase, surpassing estimates of 2.9%. Experts interpreted this as a reset rather than a revival, indicating solid productivity gains. The report highlighted strong job growth in sectors like professional and business services, healthcare, and transportation, while leisure and hospitality saw a decline.

The Federal Reserve is now more likely to raise interest rates at its December meeting, with a 73% probability according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Analysts suggested that the strong labor market data supports the Fed's focus on moderating inflation without hindering employment. Despite the positive jobs report, stock markets showed little immediate reaction, with futures mostly unchanged.

Experts emphasized the breadth of job gains across private industries and the potential for continued hiring momentum. However, they also cautioned about near-term volatility due to election and AI-related concerns. Overall, the report reinforced the resilience of the U.S. economy amid geopolitical and inflationary challenges.
