Ueda Leaves Market Bets for October BOJ Hike Unchallenged
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda offered no strong indication on Tuesday that he would oppose market expectations of a second consecutive interest rate hike in October. In a brief speech in Tokyo, Ueda reiterated the central bank’s existing policy stance, leaving little room for interpretation.
The governor stated, “We intend to continue raising the policy interest rate and adjusting the degree of monetary accommodation in response to developments in economic activity, prices, and financial conditions.” This remark aligns with the prevailing sentiment that the BOJ may proceed with another rate increase this month.
Ueda’s comments came amid speculation that the Bank of Japan could follow up its September rate hike with another adjustment in October. His lack of dissent suggests that the central bank remains focused on its policy objectives, which include managing inflation and supporting economic stability.
