UK Banks Successfully Complete Live Customer Transactions with Tokenised Deposits
UK banks have successfully completed live customer transactions using tokenised sterling deposits. This milestone marks a significant step in payments innovation in the UK.
Tokenised deposits are digital representations of traditional commercial bank money, retaining trust and regulatory protections while offering benefits such as programmability, speed, and efficiency.
The Great British Tokenised Deposit (GBTD) initiative, convened by UK Finance, involved Barclays, HSBC UK, Lloyds Banking Group, Monzo, Nationwide, NatWest, and Santander. The banks executed the first set of live retail transactions, including two remortgage completions and a consumer marketplace transaction.
The pilots demonstrated how tokenised deposits can deliver practical benefits to customers, such as contingent payments that give them greater control over their money. They also showed how connecting with HM Land Registry digitally could improve transaction efficiency.
