US Inflation Jumps as Gas Prices Surge Amid Middle East Tensions
U.S. inflation accelerated in August as gas prices surged due to renewed fighting in the Middle East, according to the Labor Department's consumer price index (CPI) report.
The CPI rose 3.4% last month compared to a year ago, matching July's increase. However, on a monthly basis, inflation quickened with costs jumping 0.4% from July to August, up from an increase of just 0.1% the previous month.
The uptick in gas prices was largely driven by tensions in the Middle East, which have caused global oil prices to rise. This has led to higher fuel costs for consumers, exacerbating affordability concerns ahead of the midterm elections in seven weeks.
