US Tariffs Hit Canadian Goods Amid Escalating Trade Tensions
The US has announced new tariffs and import bans on Canadian goods, effective September 15. The new duties will apply to 0.6% of US imports from Canada, with affected products including outboard motorboats and metal and paper products.
BMO chief economist Doug Porter described the move as 'not really a net new escalation by the US' but rather a reshuffling of existing tariffs. He noted that some sectors have been let off the hook, while others will be hit hard.
Porter estimated that the banned export products worth $1 billion to Canada's economy, although he said this would not significantly impact growth in the near term. However, he warned that escalating trade tensions could lead to further growth cuts if the situation deteriorates.
