USD/CAD Breakout Accelerates as US Rates Take Center Stage
The USD/CAD exchange rate has experienced a significant surge in recent days, breaking through key technical levels and showing a strong correlation with US two-year yields. This increase in sensitivity to front-end rates is a departure from the broader picture, where movements in US-Canada yield spreads have maintained a relatively strong relationship with the pair over 20 and 60-day windows.
According to LSEG data, the correlation between daily changes in USD/CAD and US two-year yields has risen to +0.74 over the past five sessions, outperforming its relationship with longer-dated US yields. In contrast, the correlation with the US-Canada two-year spread has been effectively zero.
The rebound in USD/CAD has also coincided with a relative improvement in US economic data compared with expectations versus that seen in Canada. Data surprises in the United States have become more positive after a period of fewer upside shocks, while Canadian outperformance has started to reverse.
