USD/CAD Breakout Gathers Pace as US Rates Take Over

USD/CAD has been on a tear lately, breaking out of its downtrend established in early July and pushing above its key medium- and long-term moving averages. The pair's recent sensitivity to US front-end rates has been particularly strong, with the correlation between daily changes in USD/CAD and two-year US yields rising to +0.74 over the past five sessions.

While technicals explain the pair's movements, fundamental factors also play a role. The rebound in USD/CAD coincided with improved US economic data compared to expectations versus Canada. This shift has led to a widening of US-Canada yield spreads, particularly at the two and five-year tenors.

The 50% retracement level, currently at 1.3991, will be crucial for assessing possible setups in USD/CAD as markets head into the weekend. A move above this level could confirm the bullish breakout, while a reversal that pushes the pair towards the 38.2% Fib at 1.3930 may signal the trend's potential reversal.
