USD/JPY: Yen Pulls Back from Lows, Prospects for Strengthening Limited
The Japanese yen has regained some ground after hitting two-week lows, but its prospects for strengthening remain limited. The USD/JPY pair opened at 157.30 this week.
A turnaround came last Friday when Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama's comments boosted the yen. She mentioned that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and she would continue coordinating after their joint intervention in late July, which was the first such action since 1998.
Despite this intervention, the yen's upside remains constrained by the wide US-Japan rate differential, expectations of further Federal Reserve rate hikes, and uncertainty over the Bank of Japan's policy trajectory. The 160 level is a key psychological threshold that could trigger intervention.
