Warsh Era Fed Wins Over Wall Street as Inflation Fears Ebb
The Federal Reserve has been struggling to meet its 2% inflation target for the past five years. However, under new leadership from Kevin Warsh, there appears to be a shift in attitude towards combating inflation.
Initially, Wall Street was skeptical about Warsh's resolve, but recent actions have convinced investors that he is serious about bringing down inflation. Chairman Powell delivered a major speech at the end of August, signaling his dissatisfaction with persistently high inflation, and subsequent rate hikes have further solidified this stance.
Economists and financial professionals are now more inclined to trust Warsh's ability to meet the 2% target within two years, according to Gregory Daco. However, there is still division on Wall Street regarding the number of future rate hikes needed to achieve this goal, with some projecting three additional hikes by April next year.
A key challenge for the Federal Reserve is addressing supply-side issues related to tariffs and oil, as well as robust economic growth that could push inflation higher through normal demand channels. Analysts also question whether Warsh will wait two or three years to achieve this goal, given his past tendency to take aggressive measures against inflation.
