Warsh Fed Can't Fix Washington's Fiscal Mess
Axel Merk, founder of Merk Investments, believes that even if the Federal Reserve is moving in the right direction under Chair Kevin Warsh, it cannot fix Washington's deteriorating fiscal position. Merk said that good monetary policy can only do so much when combined with bad fiscal policy.
Merk acknowledged that Warsh has made significant progress in restoring discipline at the central bank by pulling it away from politics and focusing on its traditional responsibilities of price stability and credit availability. He also praised Warsh's decision to raise interest rates, which Merk said reinforced the central bank's credibility after signaling that policymakers would act if inflation failed to improve.
However, Merk remains concerned about persistent government deficits and the broader fiscal trajectory. He believes that higher interest rates could eventually impose greater discipline on lawmakers, but is skeptical that elevated bond yields alone will force Washington to meaningfully address government spending.
