Wood Sees Dollar Surge as Threat to Gold and Crypto
Cathie Wood, CEO of ARK Invest, is predicting a significant surge in the US dollar over the next few years. According to her, the dollar has already gained 36% since August 2008 and now trades 44% above its long-term average on the Federal Reserve's broader index. This growth is attributed to tax incentives encouraging companies to reinvest in US factories and data centers, as well as expected monetary discipline from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.
A stronger dollar could put pressure on gold prices, which have historically struggled against a strengthening dollar. Wood believes that tighter policy could reverse some of the dollar's lost purchasing power against gold since 2002, when it has fallen by 92%. A key level to watch is $4,000, as Morgan Stanley's Amy Gower sees this as strong support for gold prices.
BTC's recent behavior is also worth monitoring. Despite a strengthening dollar in September, Bitcoin rose 6.14%, potentially indicating that its usual inverse relationship with the dollar may be weakening. If this trend continues, Wood's stronger-dollar call could pose a significant challenge to crypto investors.
