Yen Surges Past Seven-Month High Amid Bank of Japan Rate Hike Expectations
The Japanese yen surged to a seven-month high against the US dollar on Monday, driven by bets on faster Bank of Japan tightening and expectations of capital repatriation by Japanese investors.
The dollar fell 1.14% to 154.42 yen, its lowest since February, surpassing August lows after joint market intervention by Washington and Tokyo.
According to Lee Hardman, senior currency analyst at MUFG, the break past the 155 level reinforced bullish views on the yen. 'So far this year, when we have seen the yen strengthen following bouts of intervention, that 155 level was where dollar/yen tended to bottom out,' he said.
Hardman noted the yen's recent surge signals a potential tipping point as the Bank of Japan accelerates rate hikes. 'We could be getting to a tipping point,' he said.
