Yuan Surges to Four-Year High on Strong Export Flows
The yuan has strengthened to its highest level against the dollar in over four years, driven by China's robust export flows and the People's Bank of China's consistent daily reference rates. The currency reached as much as 6.6967 per dollar on Friday, a level last seen in July 2022.
The PBOC's eighth consecutive session of firmer guidance has been a signal to policymakers that they are comfortable with the yuan's appreciation trajectory ahead of next week's meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Washington.
However, the central bank has continued to set its daily reference rates weaker than prevailing market levels, indicating a preference for measured gains rather than a rapid surge. According to Khoon Goh, head of Asia research at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group, 'The fixing signals the authorities' intent to narrow the gap between the fix and spot.' Further gains are likely if the fixings continue on their recent trend.
