Nearly 14,000 union security officers walked off the job in California on Friday morning, demanding better pay, retirement benefits, and improved training. The strike, organized by SEIU United Service Workers West, affects contractors including Allied Universal, Securitas, PalAmerican, GardaWorld, and Prosegur. These guards staff security posts at facilities tied to some of the most recognizable names in American business, including Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, Google, Meta, and Netflix.

The workers are fighting for a real path toward a $30 minimum wage along with stronger retirement and health benefits. According to research from UC Berkeley, more than two thirds of Bay Area security guards qualify as low-wage workers, earning a median of around $20 an hour, less than half what a typical worker in the region makes.

The strike highlights the stark contrast between the wealth protected by these workers and their own financial struggles. A veteran guard with 36 years on the job described being assaulted, robbed, and held at gunpoint during his career, along with finding a body while on duty. Union leaders say real progress emerged at the bargaining table once they issued formal strike notice, and both sides are expected to return to negotiations shortly.
