$167.5 Million Settlement Aims to Compensate ATM Fee Payers
Visa and Mastercard have agreed to settle a lawsuit alleging their rules kept fees higher at independent ATMs, such as machines at gas stations, hotels, and convenience stores. The settlement is worth $167.5 million and affects anyone who paid an ATM fee in the US between October 24, 2007, and August 14, 2026.
To be eligible for a share of the funds, you must have paid a fee to withdraw cash from an independent ATM using your debit card or PIN-debit card. The withdrawal must have come from a deposit account, and credit card cash advances and prepaid card transactions are excluded.
The companies deny any wrongdoing, stating that this settlement is not an admission of liability. However, the court still needs to approve the agreement before payments can be made. A hearing is scheduled for February 17, 2027, and claims must be filed online or by mail by February 10, 2027.
