$29m Awarded to Family of Irish UN Employee Killed in Boeing 737 Max Crash

The family of Michael Ryan, an Irish United Nations employee who died in the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max crash in 2019, has been awarded $29m (£21.5m) in damages.

A jury in Chicago found Boeing responsible and ordered the company to pay the sum to Ryan's widow, Naoise Connolly Ryan.

Michael Ryan was among the 157 people killed on board Flight ET302, which crashed near Addis Ababa airport six minutes after take-off on 10 March 2019.

The preliminary report into the accident suggested that the plane's automated safety system repeatedly pushed the nose of the plane down, leading to the crash.
