4,000-Acre Mishawaka-Granger Development Plan Raises Concerns
A proposed economic development area in Mishawaka and Granger has been discussed by local council candidates and experts. The proposed Capital Avenue Economic Development Area would encompass a massive 4,000-acre area, including the 900-acre Microsoft project site. St. Joseph County Council District C candidate Jan Cervelli hosted a community meeting with Tax Increment Financing (TIF) experts Rich Hill and Doug Hunt to discuss the proposal.
According to the experts, TIF would allow the area to be redeveloped without increasing property taxes for local residents. The goal is to attract new businesses and jobs to the region, but some have raised concerns about the potential risks and benefits of the plan.
The proposed development area has sparked debate among locals, with some seeing it as an opportunity for growth and others worrying about the impact on existing communities. As the proposal moves forward, it remains to be seen whether it will bring economic benefits or unintended consequences.
