$4.5B Deal Seals Qatar's Purchase of Upgraded Tanker Aircraft
Qatar has secured approval from the U.S. State Department to purchase up to four KC-46A refueling aircraft, along with backup engines, radar gear, and extra systems, for a total of approximately $4.5 billion.
The deal is part of Qatar's efforts to modernize its military capabilities, which has been building momentum in recent years. The State Department stated that the sale would serve U.S. diplomatic and security interests in the region.
The main contractors on the deal are Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and RTX Corp, with work being spread across several defense giants. This is a significant order for Boeing's KC-46A tanker model, which has had a rocky rollout but remains the go-to choice for allies looking to upgrade their refueling fleets.
The delivery of the aircraft is expected to be completed by August 20, 2026, giving Boeing a solid runway to build and deliver the aircraft without rushing. This deal reinforces the trend of global military spending increasing, with countries in the Middle East modernizing their forces and U.S. companies supplying defense equipment.
