AFT and Microsoft Unveil National AI Safety & Privacy Standard
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has partnered with Microsoft to establish legally enforceable protections for students, families, and educators using Microsoft's technology in schools.
The National AI Safety & Privacy Standard, announced last week, will apply to U.S. school districts and independent schools with Microsoft agreements beginning November 1st.
The standard prohibits Microsoft from using student or educator data to train its AI models, sell that information, or use it for advertising.
AFT President Randi Weingarten described the agreement as an effort to create privacy protections with 'real teeth,' arguing that voluntary commitments are not enough where kids are concerned and when governments have thus far failed to establish comprehensive rules for AI in schools.
