AI Boom Burden: 'Magnificent 7' Under Threat from Rising Bond Yields
Michael Hartnett, chief investment strategist at Bank of America, coined the term 'Magnificent 7' in May 2023 to describe a group of companies that have driven the stock market during an AI boom. The Mag 7 consists of Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla.
Hartnett attributes the rise of these companies to investors avoiding government bonds due to fiscal excess. They preferred to lend money to companies with large cash reserves that didn't spend much.
However, Hartnett now believes this same trait has become a vulnerability for the Mag 7. Global AI investment is expected to exceed $1 trillion in 2026, and these hyperscalers are spending heavily on AI capex, leading to negative cash flow of around $200 billion.
