AI-Driven Earnings Surge Fuels S&P 500 Growth Amid Market Concerns

The S&P 500 companies' second-quarter earnings have seen a significant surge, driven largely by AI-related companies. According to estimates, aggregate earnings for the index are expected to grow by 52% year-over-year, with the tech sector experiencing a 74% profit jump.

The boost is partly due to gains in Alphabet and Amazon's investments in AI highfliers like Anthropic. Excluding these mark-to-market gains, second-quarter profit growth would be around 33%, which is still the strongest quarter since 2021 but slightly less impressive when considering that many investors view such gains with caution.

Savita Subramanian from BofA Securities noted, 'Mark-to-market gains can turn into losses just as fast.'
