AI Growth Accelerates as Microsoft and Amazon's Cloud Revenue Soars
Microsoft and Amazon's latest quarterly results have provided a boost to the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, suggesting that AI demand is no longer the problem - but rather capacity. Both technology giants delivered stronger-than-expected cloud growth, with Microsoft's Azure reporting 39% year-on-year growth, while Amazon's AWS reported 37% year-on-year revenue growth.
Management at both companies stated that their growth was constrained not by customer demand but by the availability of GPUs. Amazon warned that AI demand could exceed available cloud capacity through 2028 and has increased its planned capital expenditure to nearly US$220 billion to meet this demand.
The market reaction reflected optimism, with Microsoft shares surging more than 15% and Amazon climbing 15.3%. Analysts believe the results indicate that the AI investment cycle is beginning to deliver tangible financial returns.
However, some experts caution that the industry still faces challenges in building enough infrastructure to meet demand. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, stated that 'the biggest takeaway from these earnings is simple: AI demand is no longer the question. The real challenge is building enough infrastructure to keep up with it.'
