AI Optimism Lifts Wall Street Amid Bond Market Volatility
The global stock markets experienced mixed results on Thursday due to fluctuations in bond yields. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 index rose by 0.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 21 points and the Nasdaq composite gained less than 0.1%. In contrast, European stock indexes fell by up to 1.7% in London and 1% in Frankfurt.
The bond market's volatility was triggered by rising U.S. Treasury yields, which shot up to nearly 5.3% before retreating to 5.2%. This increase in yields can slow down the economy by making borrowing more expensive and affecting stock prices.
Despite these challenges, optimism surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) technology supported Wall Street's performance. Micron Technology, a leading AI-related company, reported stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings, driving its stock up 3%. Nvidia also rose by 1.1%, contributing to the S&P 500's gain.
