AI Redefines Smart Speaker Market as Amazon Dominates Sales
A new report from Parks Associates reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the smart speaker market, driving consumers to demand more personalized and context-aware assistance. The firm's research shows that one-half of US internet households own a smart speaker or smart display, making it one of the largest installed bases in the connected home.
Amazon dominates the market, accounting for 78% of recent smart display purchases, according to Parks Associates' Consumer Insights: Tech Ecosystem Dashboard and AI Experience Dashboard. The firm's analysis also highlights Amazon's leadership in the connected home ecosystem, with US customers who use Alexa for Shopping on Amazon spending an average of over 40% more per order than those who don't.
The shift towards AI-native connected home experiences is further underscored by OpenAI's development of a portable, screenless AI companion. This move signals a broader trend in the industry towards more personalized and intelligent experiences. As Elizabeth Parks, President and CMO at Parks Associates, notes: 'Smart speakers have reached mass-market adoption, and the next phase of growth will be driven by intelligence rather than hardware.'
The report also identifies opportunities for device manufacturers, broadband providers, security companies, utilities, and smart home platform providers to integrate conversational AI into customer experiences. This integration can lead to new recurring service opportunities while improving engagement and satisfaction.
