AI Shift Goes Mainstream Across S&P 500
Goldman Sachs has identified a significant shift in corporate strategy across the S&P 500, with artificial intelligence becoming a mainstream theme. According to Goldman's data, by early 2026, over 60% of S&P 500 companies mentioned AI during their second-quarter earnings calls, up from just a low-teens percentage in 2022. This trend is also spreading beyond mega-cap technology, with roughly 50% of Russell 3000 companies discussing AI.
The shift has not yet translated into measurable revenue growth, lower costs, and stronger margins for most companies. Goldman's research found that only a small fraction of S&P 500 companies have quantified specific AI productivity gains. Management teams are increasingly discussing AI in relation to productivity, automation, competitive positioning, and investment plans.
Investors should focus on measurable operating results rather than earnings-call mentions. They should watch for companies disclosing AI-driven revenue growth, lower labor costs, faster productivity growth, or sustained margin expansion. If management teams explicitly raise guidance due to AI efficiencies, it could be a strong signal that the benefits are broadening across the S&P 500.
