Alaska Airlines Eyes Nonstop Seattle-Hong Kong Route Expansion
Alaska Airlines is considering a major expansion of its long-haul network, with speculation growing around the potential launch of a nonstop route from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). The airline, now the fifth-largest in the US following its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, has been strategically expanding its global reach. It currently operates five nonstop long-haul flights from Seattle, including destinations like Tokyo, Seoul, London, and Rome, with plans to add Athens and Paris in the coming year.
The airline's Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Harrison, hinted that Alaska Airlines aims to operate a total of 15 long-haul routes by the end of the decade. The carrier has firm orders for an additional 17 Boeing 787-10 aircraft, which will feature around 46% premium seating to attract high-fare-paying travelers. The addition of Hong Kong to the route map would mark the airline's third gateway in Asia, following Tokyo and Seoul, leveraging the strong Asian diaspora and tech scene in the region.
While Cathay Pacific is the only existing operator on the SEA-HKG route, Alaska Airlines has been expanding its presence in Asia. Harrison confirmed that the majority of the airline's next long-haul moves will be in the Asia region, with other potential destinations including Shanghai, Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, and Bangkok. The airline's growth strategy includes leveraging its extensive domestic and short-haul international network to expand its global reach from its Seattle hub.
