Cisco Report Reveals Organizational Friction Hinders AI-Powered Cybersecurity Defense

New research from Cisco highlights a growing challenge in cybersecurity: organizations struggling with internal friction are finding it difficult to defend against AI-powered attacks. The Relentless Defense Report reveals that only 8% of organizations globally, including in India, qualify as 'Relentless Defenders,' excelling in broad coverage, fast response, and seamless teamwork.

Key barriers to stronger cyber defense include organizational friction, such as unclear decision rights, fragmented data, and silos across IT, procurement, and executive leadership. For instance, only 41% of organizations globally report that security, networking, and IT teams operate as one cohesive unit. Additionally, 43% of organizations find it difficult to translate technical metrics into business insights that can influence decision-making.

Despite AI's potential to enhance detection and response times, fewer than half of organizations have extensively deployed AI-powered security capabilities. Concerns over data exposure, compromised systems, and third-party handling are major hurdles. However, Relentless Defenders stand out by reducing friction and controlling AI development more effectively. They are 83% more likely to operate as a single coordinated security team and 86% more likely to apply consistent controls to AI agents.

Among organizations increasing security spending, Relentless Defenders are nearly twice as likely to see a reduction in incidents. These findings underscore the critical need for organizational alignment and coordinated efforts to effectively govern and leverage AI in cybersecurity.
