Albert Josef Stumpf Leaves Lasting Legacy in Public Service and Volunteerism
Albert Josef Stumpf passed away peacefully at home on July 14, 2026. Born in Munich, Germany on November 25, 1932, Stumpf spent his childhood traveling to the mountains with his family for skiing and hiking.
After World War II, Stumpf developed a lifelong interest in photography after receiving his first camera from a US GI. At 19, he moved to Los Angeles to live with relatives, where he worked in an airplane parts manufacturing plant before being drafted into the U.S. Army for two years and eight years of reserve service.
Stumpf graduated from UCLA with a degree in accounting in 1960 and began his career as a staff accountant for Los Angeles County. He was selected to attend IBM's programming school after scoring high on a math test, marking the beginning of his long and distinguished career in data processing.
