Alice's Algorithm: IBM Brings AI to US Open Tennis
The US Open tennis tournament has introduced new AI features to enhance fan experience. IBM and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) have collaborated on advanced technology that tracks player movements and predicts match outcomes in real-time.
One of the key innovations is the Serve Quality metric, which analyzes a player's serve using limb-tracking technology. The system monitors 21 points across a player's body and racquet, processing data 50 times per second to generate a Serve Quality score. This score provides fans with a clear understanding of what makes a particular serve effective.
The app also features 'Key Moments,' which takes prediction a step further by explaining why the odds are shifting. It summarizes turning points and momentum swings that change a match, giving fans a deeper understanding of the game.
