Alphabet in Talks for $1 Billion Nuclear Power Deal to Fuel AI Growth
Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google (GOOGL), is reportedly nearing a major agreement to secure nuclear power for its expanding AI operations. The deal, potentially worth over $1 billion, would involve purchasing electricity from Constellation Energy. This move comes as tech giants increasingly seek reliable energy sources to support their massive data centers.
The agreement could be announced as early as this week, according to sources familiar with the situation. Constellation Energy declined to comment, and Google did not immediately respond to requests for confirmation. The deal highlights the growing challenge for AI companies to obtain sufficient electricity to power their infrastructure.
Nuclear energy is gaining attention as a viable solution due to its ability to provide consistent power without direct carbon emissions. Google has already taken steps in this direction, collaborating with NextEra Energy to restart a nuclear facility in Iowa last year and agreeing to support renovations at two nuclear reactors with Southern Co.
The competition for reliable electricity is intensifying among major AI investors, with Constellation Energy also securing separate power deals with Amazon and Microsoft. The estimated $1 billion agreement would further signal Alphabet's long-term commitment to AI, extending beyond investments in chips and servers to include substantial energy contracts.
