Alphabet's AI Infrastructure Push Hits Capacity Constraints
Alphabet's (NASDAQ:GOOGL) data center push has put cloud backlog in sharp focus, as the company continues to struggle with meeting demand for artificial intelligence services. The parent of Google and Google Cloud has widened its technical infrastructure spending plan multiple times this year due to growing interest from enterprises in generative and agentic AI offerings tied to custom silicon.
The backlog for Google Cloud's AI solutions has expanded by tens of billions across recent periods, reflecting multi-year commitments from enterprise customers building generative and agentic applications. Management has pointed to backlog growth as a clearer signal of durable demand than quarterly revenue alone, since large enterprise agreements often span several years.
Alphabet is continuing its aggressive infrastructure buildout, breaking ground on new data center campuses while retrofitting existing facilities to support denser, more power-intensive AI workloads. The company will lean more heavily on third-party capacity providers in the near term while its own facilities continue coming online across multiple regions.
